The Evolution of Supreme & Baseball

The New York Yankees moved to the Big Apple over 100 years ago in 1903. While the Yankees remain the most winning franchise in sports history with 27 championships in the last 100 years, Supreme has also sat atop the proverbial throne of streetwear since their inception in 1994. It’s not uncommon for Supreme to refer to themselves as the “World Champs”, as you might see on the details of their caps and jerseys. Take their Hebrew Fitted Cap from the Spring/Summer 2014 collection, which highlights their championship years, or the Championship Football top from the same season which includes a ridiculously sized patch that lists every year the brand had existed to that point.

Before The Yankees Collaboration

The ultimate power move is collaborating with the most successful sports franchise ever. But before the official New York Yankees collaboration released in Spring/Summer 2015, Supreme launched dozens of Yankees-inspired pieces throughout the years, making their affinity for the legendary team clear. These items paved the way for the official collaboration, and included everything from the classic Championship Ring T-Shirt to the highly coveted By Any Means Fitted Cap. Not to mention seasonal releases almost always included a fitted cap in navy with white font, emulating the Bronx Bombers’ iconic color scheme. All fitted caps were produced by New Era, the official hat provider to Major League Baseball, of course.

 

 

 

 

Supreme doesn’t just appreciate the Yanks. Baseball jerseys have been a seasonal staple for Supreme since the earlier 2000s. They’ve utilized a variety of fabrics (wool, satin, mesh, etc.) and referenced a ton of different MLB team color schemes (San Diego Padres, Oakland A’s, and of course the New York Yankees). The jerseys are sometimes classic button-ups, sometimes pullover style (reminiscent of the MLB jerseys of the 80s) and they’ve even made a sleeveless zip up. It all began in the early 2000s with their Mitchell & Ness collaborations. These all-wool jerseys are some of the most sought after Supreme jersey’s ever produced, and the original collaboration is a clear reference to Mobb Deep’s “Shook Ones PT II”. We’re all fans of team Hennessy, right?

 

 

 

 

Prior to the official New York Yankees collection release in Spring/Summer 2015, Supreme hinted at their upcoming collaboration with the release of their Rawlings Glove and Baseball during the Spring/Summer 2012 season. The glove came in left handed and right handed versions, and surprisingly sat on both the web shop and in Supreme stores. While we aren’t aware of either the glove or baseball being used in any MLB games, both of these accessories have rightfully taken their place among some of Supreme’s rarest accessories to release in the past decade. Sometimes the items that don’t sell out become the most rare, as very few actually make it onto the secondary market.  That’s exactly what happened here – and the same can be said for the Mizuno Aluminum Baseball Bat, which released two years later during the S/S 2014 collection. The Yankees Collaboration

All of this history led to one of Supreme’s most notable collaborations ever – the Spring/Summer 2015 New York Yankees collection. It featured everything from hoodies and hats to skate decks and even the iconic box logo tee. It was everything any Yankees fan could have ever wanted, and only further cemented Supreme as both the king of New York and the top streetwear brand in the game. Years after its release, these items are still highly coveted by collectors and Yankees fans alike.
