In 1993 Tomoaki Nagao, also known as DJ Nigo, founded his streetwear brand Bape in the Ura-Harajuku district of Tokyo. The company's name is a tribute to the film "Planet of the Apes" from 1968 and the Japanese phrase "a bathing ape in lukewarm water" that refers to someone overindulging in consumerism.
