Futura, formerly known as Futura 2000, is a pioneering graffiti artist from New York who has evolved into an influential designer worldwide. Known for his bold, abstract style, he first gained recognition in the 1970s for painting futuristic, dynamic compositions on the New York subway. In 1997, he launched Futura Laboratories (FL), a creative studio and lifestyle brand that started in Brooklyn and later established a flagship store in Japan. Today, FL is a platform for Futura’s boundary-pushing designs, while his art remains highly sought after across multiple industries.
Over the decades, his artistry has expanded beyond graffiti, leading to collaborations in fashion and apparel, with the mega sport and footwear brand Nike, and even consumer tech. Futura’s designs have graced various Dunk Low silhouettes and are highly sought after. When first collaborating with the brand, Futura’s designs used a plethora of neutral colors as seen in this 2003 Nike Dunk Low Pro SB, but the 2020s have seen colorful colorways like the Nike SB Dunk Low Bleached Aqua.
In Futura’s hometown of New York City, The Bronx Museum presented an extensive retrospective exhibition of his five-decade career. The 2024 exhibition detailed his artistic evolution from his early days as a graffiti artist to his later-in-life contemporary abstraction style.
