Kenny Scharf

American artist Kenny Scharf was born in 1958 and is known for his interdisciplinary work encompassing painting, video art, sculpture, performance, fashion, and street art. Having attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City, Scharf is frequently identified by his association with the East Village art scene during the 1980s, working with now deceased contemporaries Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring.

Scharf’s early expositions include shows at historically significant spaces like New York’s Fun Gallery and the 1985 Whitney Biennial. His innovation of Cosmic Caverns created Scharf’s early notoriety. Known for their transience, these Caverns are black light and neon color spatial installations that also doubled as disco parties. The debut was created in Scharf’s Times Square apartment, which he shared with Keith Haring in the 1980s, called the Cosmic Closet. These works of art manipulate spatial perception with color and cartoonish illustrations. Works like the Kenny Scharf Yummy Print Signed, Edition of 100, with its cartoon overload aesthetic, recall the fully immersive 3D day-glo environment of Scharf’s signature installations.

Tandem to the caché of his downtown DIY roots, Kenny Scharf’s reputation has expanded during his lifetime as many of his now deceased contemporaries have gone on to become legends. Counter to his DIY roots, Scharf collaborated with fashion house Dior, where his signature grinning cartoon faces have graced the French maison´s handbags, footwear, and clothing. Never tiring of new media, Scharf’s output also extends to a jewelry collection with Dior, 3D collectible figures, skate decks, and more.
