Public School New York, also referred to as PSNY, is an American clothing brand founded in 2008 by designers Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne. Chow and Osborne set out to redefine men’s sportswear, and since 2014 their output has included womenswear as well.
PSNY takes its name from its founders’ shared heritage of attending public school in New York City, with Chow hailing from Queens and Osborne hailing from Brooklyn. Their shared affinity for street style and crafting one’s external image via clothing ignited when the two met while working for clothing brand Sean John. During the 20-teens, the duo’s work was awarded by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. In 2013, they won the CFDA's Swarovski Award for Menswear, and 2014 saw them take home the Menswear Designer of the Year award. This recognition led PSNY to participate in major brand collaborations. In 2015, they helmed creative direction for DKNY, and in 2015 they were tapped to lend their aesthetic to a PSNY Jordan brand footwear series, like the Jordan 10 Retro PSNY Black.
PSNY’s New York sensibility informs their output, which is characterized by a balanced urban aesthetic. PSNY’s series of Jordan 12 Retro sneakers exemplifies how they play with uncommon monochrome palettes in luxe suede with subtle logo treatment. This skill attracted collaborations from a slate of brands, across a variety of genres.
