The Felipe Pantone Subtractive Variability Compact 2022 Edition of 200 is a limited edition kinetic wall sculpture measuring 18.5 by 18 by 2 inches and constructed with UV paint on PMMA using a pulley system, produced in an edition of 200 and entirely created and produced at Felipe Pantone's studio in Valencia, Spain, with each piece hand signed and numbered by the artist and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. The work combines the manipulable aspect of Pantone's ongoing Configurable Art practice with the operation of the CMY color model — cyan, magenta, and yellow — creating endless shades of the chromatic spectrum through the subtraction of light that occurs when the three spinning PMMA discs are combined in their different variations, with the artist describing the piece as summarizing "in the most minimal, concise, and pedagogical manner, the way in which color works" and offering the viewer "a sort of induced synesthesia between touch and sight." The Subtractive Variability Compact is the first work in the series, with Subtractive Variability Compact 2 following in October 2022 as a sequel with a different disc pattern, both editions establishing the Subtractive Variability Compact as one of Felipe Pantone's most commercially significant and most widely collected limited edition sculpture formats across his contemporary art practice.
