Hebru Brantley

American artist Hebru Brantley is identified by his colorful, evocative work that weaves narratives around his conceptualized characters. Frequently utilizing art history references, Brantley endeavors to reassess modern mythology and culture through the lens of his unique experience. To do so, Brantley utilizes comic-inspired characters and vivid animation-like illustration to address complex ideas.

Hebru Brantley’s visual style draws inspiration from the clean and expressive delineation of animation. This direct and comprehensible visual style expresses his concept of dark fiction, which encompasses everything from a continent to identity and mindset. One of Brantley’s most prominent characters is Lil Mama, who is identified by her hair in two pink puffs and is frequently depicted in a green cap with round blue goggles. Having exhibited his work in major cities regularly since 2007, Brantley’s distinct and confrontational output has caught the eye of high-profile collaborators. For a project with the Chicago Bulls, Brantley created the Hebru Brantley x Chicago Bulls Benny The Bull Bobblehead, who recalls Lil Mama’s style while poised to tear up the basketball court.

As Brantley’s illustration style utilizes an approachability found in animated series and superhero storytelling, his talent and output have been well suited to transcend into realms beyond the art world. Collectors of Brantley’s work can find signed prints and collectible figures, but his signature motifs have also been translated into clothing, skate decks, rugs, books, and even artist edition sporting equipment.
