Mastermind

Mastermind is a Japanese streetwear fashion brand founded in 1997 by designer Honma Masaki, who had previously worked for Yohji Yamamoto. Mastermind is known for their commitment to producing collections in Japan, utilizing natural and native materials and time-honored fabrication techniques, while taking advantage of the latest technological developments in apparel.

Mastermind is most recognized by one of their signature motifs, the skull and crossbones. Masaki developed this artwork in the 1990s, before computer-aided design, rendering upward of one thousand skulls by hand to launch the initial designs. Styles like the Mastermind x Vans Vault Zip Hoodie exemplify the label´s aesthetic, displaying just the right balance of subtle and striking graphic placement. However, Mastermind is no stranger to bold expression, opting to translate the iconic skull motif into a diagonal logo stripe on the Nuptse Jacket for a collaboration with The North Face.

Adhering to their signature skull and crossbones aesthetic, while implementing it across innovations in classic streetwear styles like hoodies, denim jackets, and track pants has made Mastermind a brand ripe for collaboration. Mastermind has teamed up with major recording artists like Travis Scott and iconic sneaker brands like Vans, and they have even worked with art toy producer Bearbrick on a series of Collectibles. Mastermind’s Bearbrick collectibles feature their own collaboration with the toy producer and their collaborative vision on behalf of fellow streetwear brands like Mishka and Bape.
