Sacai

Sacai is a Japanese fashion brand founded by Chitose Abe in 1999. Daughter of a seamstress, Abe began crafting clothes for dolls as a child. Before founding Sacai, Abe was part of the design and pattern-making team at Comme des Garçons, and she also worked under designer Junya Watanabe.

The aesthetic that Chitose Abe has created with Sacai is one that blurs the border between casual and formal wear. Sacai’s ready to wear pieces feature innovative construction methods that improvise on typical draping styles or reinvent a garment’s standard fabrication completely. For a collaboration with Carhartt WIP, Sacai generated the Sacai x Carhartt WIP Women's Canvas MA-1 Detroit Jacket Beige as a cropped, double-layered set. Touches like the canvas shell’s full skirt-like back panel and green nylon sleeve pocket express Abe’s signature ability to update a classic aesthetic with her singular vision.

Abe’s output with Sacai has caught the attention of other American brands, such as Nike. Abe reinvents the sportswear aesthetic by creating layered skirts from sleeves, blending three jackets into one, and even juxtaposing two undergarments to create a single unmistakable piece. The result is a new take on sportswear that merges athletic fabrication with fashion silhouettes. Those who appreciate Sacai’s formidable talent can create their ideal curation of authenticated designer pieces by browsing categories like other apparel-women , which is a great way to find even more under the radar and hard to define standout styles.
